Summary

Nathan received a B.S. in Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During his undergraduate training he worked in research labs studying population genetics, biochemistry and neuroscience. Nathan then went on to pursue a clinical degree receiving a doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from the National College of Natural Medicine in Portland, Oregon. This four year post-graduate program in primary care emphasized evidence-based botanical, nutritional and lifestyle medicine integrated with conventional standard of care. After five years in private practice Nathan shifted back to research joining Drs. Cullen and KIimes-Dougan as a coordinator in their collaborative studies examining the biological mechanisms of psychiatric illness.

Research

Research Summary/Interests

Nathan is interested in neuro-endo-immune pathophysiology in psychiatric illnesses and its use in diagnostic criteria and individualized treatment programs. Currently he manages two studies in the biology of adolescent mental health. One examines brain imaging, the stress hormone Cortisol and a number of potential blood markers related to inflammation, the immune system and mitochondria in youth with and without a mood disorder diagnosis. The other looks at brain imaging using a 7 Tesla MRI scan in adolescents with Major Depressive Disorder.
