Dr. Gottesman is the Bernstein Professor in Adult Psychiatry and Senior Fellow in the Department of Psychology. He comes to the University of Minnesota after retiring from the University of Virginia where he was Sherrell J. Aston Professor of Psychology and Professor of Clinical Pediatrics. He is a 1960 graduate of the Clinical Psychology Training Program at the University of Minnesota and has served on the faculties of Harvard University, University of North Carolina, Washington U. School of Medicine (Professor of Psychiatric Genetics), and the University of Virginia. His books on genetic aspects of schizophrenia have been translated into Japanese and German. He was a Guggenheim Fellow at the University of Copenhagen and a MacArthur Foundation Fellow at the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences (Stanford, CA).
His interests include the psychoses, personality disorders, genetic counseling for psychopathology, and assessment. He is Chair of the National Twin Register for the Institute of Medicine and also serves on their Board of the Medical Follow-up Agency, concerned with the health of our armed forces.
