Clinical Training

The nature of broad-based clinical training would be tailored to suit the background and needs of a particular fellow.  Such training would be arranged at the outpatient clinics and the inpatient unit of the MH PSL and will not exceed more than 60% of fellow’s time.  The fellow will be given specialized training in the management and rehabilitation of treatment resistant schizophrenia patients and schizophrenia spectrum disorder patients.  Depending upon the level and background, the fellow will receive training in psycho-pharmacological management of complex psychotic and/or borderline patients using typical and atypical anti-psychotic agents and mood stabilizers, and if required novel compounds currently under investigation.  The fellow will formulate behavioral programs for management of ritualistic, compulsive and other behavioral problems associated with this group of patients.  The fellow will also receive clinical training in cognitive behavioral therapy for persistent psychotic symptoms.

There will be no on-call clinical responsibilities but the fellow will be expected to provide weekend coverage for research patients as per rotational roster.

The following specialized clinics at MH PSL are available for the fellowship-training program:

  • SPMI team outpatient clinic
  • Center for Late Onset Psychoses and Schizophrenia (CLOPS)
  • Clozapine Clinic
  • Tardive Dyskinesia Assessment Clinic
  • Psychiatry Movement Disorders Clinic (PMDC)
  • Depot Antipsychotics Clinic
  • Schizophrenia Research Clinic

The fellow will also have the opportunity to enhance group therapy clinical skills by participating in the following groups for patients.

  • Cognitive, Behavioral & Social Skills Therapy (CBSST) Group
  • CAFÉ program (Psycho-education group)
  • Patients’ support groups
