About the Director


Scott L. McNairy, M.D.
Director of the Addiction Fellowships

Dr. McNairy received his M.A. from Carleton College in 1971 and his M.D. from the University of Louisville in 1975.  He did his Internal Medicine Residency from 1975-1976 and his Psychiatry Residency from 1977-1979 at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine.

Dr. McNairy's prior experiences include: Staff Psychiatry, Addictive Disorders Section at the Veteran's Administration Medical Center from November of 2000 to present; Physician Advisor, Magellan Behavioral Healthcare from 2000 to present; Medical Director, United Behavioral Health of Minnesota from 1996-2000; Staff Psychiatrist, Outpatient MHSA, United Behavioral systems from 1992-1996; Private Practice Psychiatrist, Abbott Northwestern Hospital from 1980-1992; Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota from 1982-2000 and at Hennepin/Regions Psychiatry Training Program from 1997-2000 and After Hours Services, Kentucky Region 8 Mental Health and Retardation Board from 1974-1975.

Dr. McNairy's research and scholarly interests include; Managed Care/Utilization Review in Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders; Chronic Pain Behavioral Rehabilitation and Complementary Care in Life Threatening Illness.

He became Director of the Addiction Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine Fellowships here at the University of Minnesota in December of 2001 and he looks forward to the coming years as his Directorship continues.
