Minutes of Department of Psychiatry Brown Bag Meeting

March 21, 2007

 Dr. Schulz made the following announcements:

• A special seminar entitled, “Clinical and Neurobiological Findings in the Early Course of Schizophrenia” will be held on Monday, March 26 at 12:00 PM in the Paula Clayton Room.  The presenter, Georg Juckel, M.D., Ph.D., is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Psychosomatic Medicine at Ruhr University in Germany.
• The Center for Cognitive Sciences Center Spring Research Day will be held on April 12, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, in Memorial Hall of the McNamara Alumni Center. 
• The Department of Psychiatry will sponsor the 2007 Psychiatry Research Day on April 13, to be held at the VAMC.
• The longstanding Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, Dr. John Greden, will be stepping down later this year to focus on directing the University of Michigan Comprehensive Depression Center.
• Dr. John Shreiber has resigned as Head of the Department of Pediatrics.  Joseph Neglia, M.D., MPH will serve as Interim Head beginning May 1, 2007.  Dr. Selwyn Vickers, Head of Surgery, will lead the search committee.
• Dr. Irving Gottesman has received the Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement from the American Psychological Association.
• Dr. Ryan O’Hare, one of the Department’s PGY-3 residents, has been selected as one of six residents at the University of Minnesota to receive the Arnold Gold Humanism and Excellence in Teaching Award.  This is the second year in a row that a Department of Psychiatry resident has been selected to receive this award.
• Tim Burkett, Executive Director of People, Inc., reported that Dr. John Vuchetich gave excellent testimony before Senator Berglin’s Health and Human Services Budget Committee.
• Dr. Marilyn Carroll was quoted about impulsive behavior and drug use by Science magazine.
• The MPS Walk for Mental Health Research will be held on Saturday, May 12.
