Minutes of Department of Psychiatry Brown Bag Meeting

April 18, 2007

Dr. Schulz made the following announcements:

  • Nominations for the 2007 Fairview Medical Staff Recognition Awards are now open.  The form is available at fairview.org/mdnomination.

  • Dr. Thomas Insel, Director of the National Institute of Mental Health, will be speaking at the Ted Mann Concert Hall at 12:15 PM on October 16, 2007 in the 2007 Guy Stanton Ford Memorial Lecture.

  • The following Department of Psychiatry faculty and residents have received patient satisfaction ratings in the top 10% of UMP providers:

  • Elke Eckert, M.D.
  • Jon Grant, J.D., M.D.
  • Suck Won Kim, M.D.
  • Kerry O’Brien, MSW
  • Sheila Specker, M.D.
  • Salima Naqvi, M.D.

  • The Walk for Mental Health Research will be held on Saturday, May 12 from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM at Lake Nokomis.   Tee shirts and a picnic lunch will be provided, and there will be personalities from KDWB, U of M researchers and speakers, and a mental health fair.

  • Dr. Melissa Polusny has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Defense to study psychiatric problems among National Guard troops.

  • The Fifth Annual NAMI Research Dinner was a great success.  Over 230 people attended.

  • Dr. Nancy Raymond reported that a draft of the revised 7.12 statement has been moved forward to the Dean’s office.  She commented that the statement is basically unchanged; however, topics such as mentorship and merit review have been expanded.

  • Dr. Scott Crow reported on the changes at the IRB.  He stated that the IRB will be meeting weekly which should allow for a quicker turnaround.  Dr. Crow said that the reviewers will also be compensated.  The scientific merit review must be done before it goes to the IRB and the suggestion of a centralized IRB remains on the table.

  • Dr. Schulz distributed a spreadsheet identifying all the department’s open faculty positions.  He reported that he will be meeting with the vice-chairs and senior leaders to examine our recruitment techniques.
