Welcome to the Psychiatry Clinic, one of the many specialty clinics at University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. In conjunction with the University of Minnesota Physicians, we offer comprehensive, coordinated health care for you and your family.

The University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview Psychiatry Clinic is located on the second floor of the Riverside West building on the Riverside campus and provides evaluation, consultation and treatment using all procedures standard in psychiatric practice. Our clinic also offers specialty areas including child and adolescent psychiatry.


Our Staff

The University of Minnesota Department of Psychiatry and University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview’s Psychiatry Clinic are committed to delivering medical care that combines excellence, service and compassion with innovative research and educational programs.

The University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview Psychiatry Clinic is a teaching facility affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School. Therefore, some or all of your care may be performed by a resident physician in psychiatry, an advanced psychiatric fellow or a psychology intern under the supervision and direction of a faculty psychiatrist, psychologist or supervising therapist. You may be asked to give permission for a medical student to observe or participate in your care. You may decline permission if you are in any way uncomfortable with this.

A fellow is a medical doctor who has completed training in general psychiatry and is pursuing in-depth training in a more specific area of psychiatry, such as child psychiatry, chemical dependency, or eating disorders. A resident physician is a medical doctor who is in a four-year program of intensive training in psychiatry. A fellow is a physician who has completed a psychiatric residency and is taking advanced training in a specialty. A medical student is an individual studying to become a medical doctor. Physicians work as a team with the psychologists, therapists and other health care professionals to deliver the highest quality medical care possible.

To Make an Appointment

The appointment number for the Psychiatry Clinic is 612-273-8710 (new appointments) or 612-273-8700 (return appointments). If you are unable to keep a scheduled appointment, please let us know at least 24 hours in advance, to avoid a late cancellation fee and so we can make that time available for another patient.

Missed Appointments: Patients are charged $25.00 for missed appointments unless the appointment was cancelled 24 hours or more in advance. Insurance will not pay a missed appointment charge for you, so please make every effort to inform us 24 hours in advance if you are unable to keep your appointment.

If you are a new patient or your insurance or address has changed and you have not been contacted by Outpatient Registration, please call 612-273-8712; or stop by Outpatient Registration located in the clinic, 20 minutes prior to your appointment. Please bring your insurance card to every appointment. Co-pays are due at the time of service.

Clinic Hours

Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Evening hours are only available as arranged by your psychiatrist or therapist.

We provide full diagnostic laboratory services on the University and Riverside Campuses of University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. To obtain your test results, call 612-273-8700.

Prescriptions and Refills

New prescriptions usually require an office visit. Your physician will give you a written prescription unless you prefer to have it called into your pharmacy. In that case, you will need to provide the name and phone number of the pharmacy. There is an outpatient pharmacy located in the Riverside Professional Building. If you are in need of a refill, please have your pharmacist call the clinic at 612-273-8717. You can fax in  your refill request to 612-273-8727. Please allow 48 hours for prescription refills.


You will receive two separate invoices for each clinic visit:

University of Minnesota Physicians invoice: This is the fee for the services provided by the Psychiatry Clinic professional staff. Please note that bills will go out under the attending physician’s or supervising therapist’s name. If you have questions regarding this invoice, please call 612-273-9700. University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview invoice: This is the fee for room and clinic resources that are provided by University of Minnesota Medical Center, Fairview. If your have questions regarding this invoice, please call 612-672-5330.

Insurance Filing Information and Patient Referral

Please be prepared to provide insurance information when you check into the clinic.

Co-pays, as dictated by your insurance plan and deposits for self-pays are due at the time service is provided. We accept major credit cards, checks or cash for these services.

University of Minnesota Physicians Psychiatry Billing Office

Located just down the hall from the Psychiatry Clinic in F279/2B West (first office to the left off the elevators.)

As a courtesy, we check insurance benefits and seek to obtain appropriate authorization. However, we cannot guarantee payment by your insurance company or the accuracy of the information they have given to us. You are encouraged to call your insurance company to ensure that your services are covered and that you have the appropriate referrals and authorizations. If you or your legal dependents receive services from the University of Minnesota Physicians, you will be held responsible for payment of all non-covered charges relating to them. It is important that you keep us updated on any changes to your insurance coverage.

Clinic Parking

Parking is available in the Red ramp, which is located between 23rd and 24th Avenue; or the Yellow ramp, located on 23rd Avenue, just north of Riverside Avenue. Parking is also available in the Blue and Green surface lots. There is a charge for parking; a reduced rate is available for clinic patients.

Please bring your ticket with you to your appointment for validation.

Parking and Wheelchairs for the Handicapped

Parking spaces for the handicapped are available in all hospital parking ramps and lots.

Wheelchairs are available upon request. You may ask staff at any information desk to call for a wheelchair.
